The Way of the Lover

Love is a way of being, a gift, and a rigorous daily practice.

Love is the compass to your destiny, your belonging, and the source of your transformation. Love can ascend you to ecstasy, great happiness, and joy—and it can break your heart open as you fall to your knees shattered. But, from that dark place of anguish, love can be the light to guide you into transcendence, where you experience a far greater capacity to love again and deepen your connection and commitment to your soul purpose.

Most religions and cultures of the world believe we are on Earth to love and to create. Love connects you directly to the divine creative force and can be the greatest generator behind all your best artistic work and your deepest relationships. It is the anchor that keeps you from being overwhelmed, helping you focus and make choices that reveal your essential nature. Love is the antidote to fear. Love has a great sense of humor, which keeps it from being self-conscious and controlled.

Love of self is essential for embracing yourself and keeping your self-value and care in balance—which is completely different than self-centered inflation. And love of other, whether person, animal, or place, is a catalyst. I cherish the moment of recognition when meeting a new person, when heart sparks fly and bring a twinkle to your eyes. It can happen with a landscape, a poem, or a glance of great beauty, too: Your soul is suddenly awakened. No longer in dormancy, your seeds begin to quicken and love bursts into bloom.

Once you love, you will never go back: Your soul has come into flower. Love is the sunshine, rain, and soil that bring your heart into Full Bloom.

PRACTICE: Create a personal ceremony of love and commitment to yourself and your own loving nature. Write your own vows for what you most love and how you will cultivate your seeds of love and water them in yourself—and in others with positive actions.
